Bwin Online Betting Case
Austrian gaming group Bwin is still involved in a court battle with Portugal, reports have recently said. Bwin brought the case, which involves the inner workings of the gambling and gaming industries, against Portugal’s state controlled sports betting association. It is saying that Portugal’s laws concerning sports betting and general gaming are too tight, and that they should be made more liberal in order that more people can benefit from the industry.
Bwin’s attempts to make the gambling laws in Portugal more liberal have so far fallen on deaf ears, and last week a senior judge backed Portugal in the row. Portugal currently has laws that say no companies can make internet bets from within the country, as all issues concerning sports betting is controlled by the state. This effectively does not let any gambling or gaming companies that use sports betting target the market in the country. Bwin is challenging this law, as it wishes to cash in on the sports betting market is Portugal.
Bwin argue that they are only trying to modernise the industry, and thus make it more fair for players and for companies, who are missing out on a large market in Portugal. Countries in Western Europe are likely to feel this lack of interest from Portugal most keenly, as they will want to gain as much revenue as they possibly can from the continent before they invest money and time expanding elsewhere in the world.
Bwin is arguing that Portugal’s sports betting association are violating European laws, however, they have suffered a setback now that Brussels has declared that it is backing Portugal in the matter. This declaration from the highest court in Europe would appear to be the end of the matter. However, it is not yet known whether Bwin will appeal the decision, or how far the company will go in order to pursue the course of action that will bring in large amounts of revenue for it in the future. If Bwin manages to get backing from other large gambling organisations, which it could easily do, this case could end up running for a while yet.
